Champagne, Styrofoam, Atom Smashers

The Atom Smashers

The Atom Smashers

I just finished watching Independent Lens: The Atom Smashers on Thirteen, a documentary about Fermilab and the American search for the Higgs boson, the so-called “God particle” and, by far, my favorite subatomic particle (along with the strange quark, of course). I gotta say, I’ve got such an appreciation for public broadcasting, and Independent Lens amazes me week after week. This is another great one. It features a cameo by Phil Donahue and the best defense of science I’ve heard in a while: “You’re alive aren’t you?” You should definitely check it out.

The film ends with another stroke of genius. The 86-year-old Fermilab Director Leon Lederman, reflects on his team’s hard work. And says…

I want to see champagne poured into Styrofoam cups.

Now that’s a sentiment I can get behind.

All images raked from The Atom Smashers blog.

(On a side note, am I the only person who is nervous the the website of the people blowing up atoms beneath the Chicago suburbs looks like it was made in 1995? By a third grader?)
