Bat Out of Hell, Ron Jenkins, Fort Worth Star-Telegram/WireImage.com/Sports Illustrated

I have no doubt in my mind that this photo is a work of art. In fact, it’s a Where’s Waldo? of the spectrum of human emotions. Terror? Check! Confusion? You got it! Oblivion? Bottom center!
No wonder it won some big photojournalism award in 2007, although I strongly disagree that it deserved only an honorable mention.

For a while, I had a hard time connecting with photography, quite unlike the bat and that guy’s face. The candid immediacy, strong narrative and saturated colors of this photo remind me a lot of the kind of photography that I first got into: guys like Joel Sternfeld, Nan Goldin and, of course, William Eggleston.
