City Camera

It’s images like this that make it easy to fall in love with New York. Not just the images, but the fact that decades after they were snapped they still ring true.

Just saw, (via New York mag) that the photographer who shot them, Helen Levitt, died last week at the age of 95. Levitt did a lot of work in my neighborhood, Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Obviously things have changed a lot since then, but when I look at her photos I recognize a crowded energy that’s still palpable, one that makes me love the place. Her photos capture the type of character that us equally totally ordinary and larger-than-life.

Where else could it be but New York?
