The new Grey Gardens just premiered and I must admit at first I was skeptical. How would the film fill in the blanks in Little Edie’s life not included in the Maysles’ documentary? And more importantly, who could top Christine Ebersole’s Broadway turn or Ms. Body Beautiful Beale herself? But after I saw the previews I got a little excited.
In a way, Drew Barrymore seems a perfect fit for the role. As Little Edie says, “the hallmark of aristocracy is responsibility.” With the Barrymore Hollywood legacy, I can imagine Drew identifying with a character with a complicated sense of familial duty.
I recently revisited Gail Sheehy’s New York magazine article, “The Secret of Grey Gardens,” a must-read for anyone interested in the Beales.
Take a wild guess who will be inspiring tomorrow’s costume for the day.
